The Wedding Present - *Punk (VHS)
I find myself watching a lot of music videos on YouTube especially bands playing live. I always feel that I get to know a band more by for example seeing if they can actually sing or not...or if certain sounds on an album are recreated to the live audience. I have always got more out of the whole “live” experience to be fair...seeing people enjoy themselves...part of a collective with the majority of people being there for the same thing...Music!...I don’t include the arseholes stood talking to each other all the way through the gigs...you can do one!
This love of live music started probably when I was about 4 years old when I used to creep downstairs after my mum had gone to bed to sit and watch The Old Grey Whistle Test with my dad...obviously not “Live” as it was on TV but at least they were playing live.
As I grew up I got my hands on a few bootleg tapes...mainly off my brother that he got from University. When videos started to appear on VHS then a flood of bands brought out Live videos...and me being me...I had my favourites.
I had the Happy Mondays “Call The Cops” and ‘Madchester’ “Rave On” videos...The Inspiral Carpets “Live at the GMEX” and my favourite which was literally played until I couldn’t play it any more “*PUNK” by The Wedding Present.
With it being many moons since this has had an airing...especially in the VHS order I thought that I would put it together again for fans to see one more time. It is great to see my favourite Weddoes line-up of David Gedge, Peter 'Grapper' Solowka, Keith Gregory and Simon Smith together on stage. The video was recorded in 1990 at the Colosseum in Leeds...that has been rebranded from the Town and Country club...Creation night club and now is known as the O2 Arena.
